From Creation to Christmas

It’s December and I’m thinking Christmas.  I’m also thinking Creation.

Here is why.  In the beginning of what we know as time, the earth was formless and empty.  There was darkness and God spoke the worlds into being.  He created animals from the dust of the earth.

Even after creating so many things and such grandeur over five days, He was still lonely.  He wanted mankind so he could have fellowship – and receive praise and worship.

He said, “Let US make man in OUR image.”  God, the Almighty God, chose to make man after Our likeness.  

He did.   [He saved the best for last. I  know this, not because man is so great, but because of what God said after he created man, at the completion of a week of creating.]

Only this time, the creating was different.  God didn’t just speak.

He stooped to the dust of the earth.  You know what?  When someone stoops to do something, they are involved and leaning into the work. Did God use His hands when He formed man?  I like to think so.

You  know what He did next?

Scripture says that God breathed into man’s hnostrils the breath of life.  Scripture says, “Man became a living soul.”  Just. Like. That.

With all His previous acts of creation, God spoke and it was so.  With all the rest of creation, God saw that it was good.

When he made the first man, He didn’t speak man into being.  He formed and He breathed. He saw that the culmination of His work was very good.

After Adam had named the creatures as God brought them to him, God formed the woman from the rib of Adam and brought her to him.

In naming the animals, Adam saw that he himself didn’t have a partner.  All the other animals had a partner. The animals were not just created male or female.  God made both.  The male for the female and the female for the male. However, there was no one for Adam.

Was Adam lonely?  Did  he realize he was actually alone?

What a WOW moment for Adam when God brought Eve to him!

That was creation – when everything was complete and perfect.

When I consider the heavens, the work of His fingers, the moon and the stars, then I wonder with the psalmist: what is man that You are mindful of us?

As mankind, we are a little lower than the angels.  We have dominion over animals on earth as well as the birds of the air and the fish of the sea.  Why?  God planned it so.

When I consider all of God’s creation I have to wonder: who am I that God is mindful of me?

This one thing I know.  It is not because of who I am or what I have done.  It is because of Who God is.

So mindful of us that, when sin entered the world, He already had a plan.  Into our fallen world, God brought a Savior. This is why we have Christmas.

It is not because of who we are, but because of Who He is.  Let us never forget.

O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth! [Psalm  8:9]
