There’s a teenage boy living at my house and I’m back in the kitchen, cooking and baking like I used to when my guys were home. The other day I tried my hand at this chocolate chip squares recipe. Said boy hinted strongly when he left for school that morning that more blueberry muffins and some cookies would make a nice after-school snack.

This recipe for chocolate chip squares comes from the cookbook My Sisters’ Recipes. My cousin Miriam is the mom of these gals. Lois, Deborah, Phoebe and Julia put their heads together and compiled a cookbook of tradition from their past and the present. How grateful I am that they compiled these recipes while their mom was still living to enjoy the cookbook!

chocolate chip squaresThis recipe is easy to make and takes a lot less time than baking cookies. The squares are soft and chewy. When I made them the first time, almost half of them were gone in a very short time. This is the kind of recipe you can mix up and then take with you to bake when you’re helping feed a small group or a crowd. The chocolate chip squares freeze well also, so you can easily keep them on hand.

Miriam's Chocolate Chip Squares

My Windowsill
A quick, simple, and easy recipe for chocolate chip squares. Confectioner's sugar is optional. Make a double batch and freeze some!
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes
Course Dessert
Cuisine American

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup light OR dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter + 1 egg soften butter
  • 1/2 cup sour milk
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar optional

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350
  • Beat sugar, butter, and eggs together
  • Stir in sour milk
  • Add flour, baking soda, and salt
  • Fold in chocolate chips
  • Bake in a 15 x 10 x 1 inch pan for approximately 20 minutes
  • Cool and cut into squares
  • Optional: while still warm, cut into squares and roll in confectioners sugar

  1. The instructions say to beat sugar, butter, & eggs together, but the list of ingredients do not list eggs?

  2. My apologies. It is ONE egg and I tried to add it but the system will not let me add it on a line of its own. So I added it next to the butter. If I can figure it out I will change it, but for right now at least the egg is added. Thanks so much for asking!
