The Secret Place in Psalm 91

Psalm 91.secret place

There are many secret places. Most governments have places prepared for government leaders in the event they must be sequestered away for their safety. People know about those buildings or rooms, but not many people know where they are. Nor can many people go into those places without permission and position of authority.

These locations are safe and secure. They provide protection, rest, and shelter. God provides a secret place for the believer.

Psalm 91 talks about this special place. It’s not a geographical location. No one can GPS their way there. Yet, the believer can go into that special spot and meet with God, alone.

Psalm 91:1-2  says, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust’.”

secret placeWhat happens inside that place

A secret place is a hiding place and a shelter. Sometimes we need physical protection; other times we need emotional or spiritual protection. We need healing and wisdom.

Sequestered in that place with God, we find rest. Too often, we attempt to wrestle on our own, out among the throngs and the upheaval. We should follow Jesus’ example.

Often after Jesus spent the day mingling with the crowd, healing people and casting out demons, He moved away from the throng and went off by Himself to pray. Time and time again, Jesus removed himself from the crowd and spent time with His Father. He modeled that for us. We must do the same.

There, we find comfort and grace. We receive wisdom and strength. Yet, to be the recipient, we must go there. It’s a choice and one that God desires we make – but it’s our choice.

This secret place is where relationship happens. It’s where we are recharged and refueled. This place is where we find rest.
