Black Beans in an Instant Pot
The easy way to do black beans.
I am a fan of black beans. I like them plain, over rice with taco salad, or in chili soup, to name a few. Having an instant pot saves time and effort, and I’ve been buying dry black beans ever since I received mine. I’ve tried many recipes of black beans in an instant pot and finally made my own recipe that works for me. If you don’t have an instant pot, you can still make your own beans, but it will take more time.
One thing I discovered is that, the larger the quantity of beans, the less water per cup is necessary. For example, my recipe calls for 1 cup of dry beans and 3 cups of water. If you triple this, you’ll have 3 cups of beans, but only need 8 cups of water. You’ll figure it out once you’ve made this recipe a time or two.
You choose the seasonings you want, and add anything you want. I’ve seen recipes that call for seasonings such as chili powder, bay leaves, and garlic. I use an onion and salt and pepper. You do not need to peel the onion, but I do recommend cutting it into half or quarters. For those who are not a fan of onions, it’s easy to pull the onion out of the beans once the beans are cooked.
You start by rinsing the beans and pulling out any pieces of dirt or particles you don’t want in the beans. Then put your ingredients into the instant pot and set the timer. Once the time is up, allow the Instant Pot to slow-release for twenty minutes. When you take the lid off, the beans might seem runny. Give it a minute and then stir the mix together. You might be surprised.
If there is still more water than you like, drain the water and save it. You can add it to the beans later or add it to soup or another dish. Making your own black beans guarantees you have only ingredients you want in your dish, and there are no extra ingredients. Homemade is healthier, for sure.
