Tell God – Because He Already Knows
Why to Tell.
David told God his heart. He did this because God already knew. We should do the same. There’s no point in hiding our feelings, emotions, tears, or anger. He already knows.
The Psalms show us many of David’s prayers. As a shepherd, a harpist, a fugitive, a father, and a king – those prayers and laments are recorded. As a sinner, an adulterer, a murderer and a polygamist, David didn’t hide anything from God. He didn’t need to hide anything, because He knew that God already knew.
David is described as a man after God’s own heart. This was partly because he confessed his sin, was contrite, and begged God for a new heart. It was also because he bared his soul to God. If he thought it, He told God. If he felt it, he told God. David did this because he knew that God already knew.
What to tell.
Everything. We really should tell Him everything. That’s because God already knows. Why try to hide something from our God who already knows? He created us with thoughts, emotions, and feelings. He knows us because He made us and planned us before our birth. He already knows, so why not just tell Him?
There are days I’ve prayed, “I’m just going to tell You, because I know You already know. Here’s how I’m feeling.” Nothing shocks or surprises Him. There are no secrets He does not already know. There are no sins of which He is not already aware. There is no anger He has not already seen festering in my heart. He already knows – and that’s why I can tell Him everything.
When and How to tell.
Holding back the truth only hurts us because He already knows. He also cares, so there’s no reason to hold back. You know what I’ve discovered? I’ve discovered that holding back only increases my stress. Telling Him everything releases the pain, anger, heartache, and hurt. When do we tell? As soon as we are aware. That soon.
How should we tell? Just like we’d share a secret or a thrill with someone dear to us; that’s how we tell. We climb up into the lap of our Father and we tell him because we can trust Him.
God is not like our earthly fathers, who love us imperfectly. Nor is He abusive or angry; his love is unconditional. We climb up into the arms of safety and tell all. He keeps the best secrets. He is the best restorer and healer of all.
He already knows.
Telling Him unleashes our pain onto Him. He can handle it because there is nothing new to Him. He already knows!
The Psalms show us David’s heart. Many of the psalms begin with lament, anger, or questions. Most of them end with praise and peace. This is because David poured out His heart to his God who already knew. By the time he was done telling God what He already knew, David found peace. We can do the same.
Tell God. Go ahead and tell Him, for He already knows.
