Pizza Crust Stromboli
Whether you prefer beef, chicken, or hamburger, you can make this Stromboli recipe. If you have extra pizza dough in your freezer, take it out at least two hours before you want to use it. The recipe I use for pizza dough can be accessed here.
For the ingredients of your Stromboli, use olive oil or butter to saute onions, mushrooms and peppers (optional). Add your canned beef or chicken, or use fried hamburger.
The How to
For this recipe, I used hamburger. Add the hamburger to your skillet, seasoning the contents with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Roll (or spread) the pizza dough onto a tray, then put your filling in the middle. Sprinkle with mozzarella/provolone cheese or any other cheese you prefer.
Fold the dough in on all sides to cover, then flip it so the seam side is down. Using a serrated knife, cut slits across the top, then brush with an egg wash.
Let it rise for 10 minutes and then bake at 375-400 for 20 minutes.
One thing I like about this Stromboli is that you can use up leftovers from your fridge. If you like a tomato flavor, add some leftover spaghetti sauce, for example. If your mixture seems dry, remember that baking will release juices; but you can add a dollop of milk to help the cheese melt if you’d like. Not everyone in my tribe likes peppers, so I didn’t add peppers; but if you’re a fan, saute peppers with your onions. Add your favorite seasonings and you’re all set!
Pizza Crust Stromboli
- 1 roll pizza dough
- 1 lb. hamburger fried
- 1 sliced onion
- 1/2 pepper diced (optional)
- 1/2 cup+ mushrooms - canned or fresh
- 1 Tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
- 1-2 Tablespoons olive oil or butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Egg wash: 1 egg beaten 1 Tablespoon water OR milk, mixed
- Saute onion and mushrooms in olive oil
- Add hamburger and stir
- Add Italian seasoning, salt and pepper, and stir
- Top with mozzarella cheese
- Simmer just a bit until cheese is partially melted
- Roll dough out onto a cookie tray
- Spoon mixture in the middle
- Bring all four edges dough up to cover hamburger mixture
- Turn over so the edges are on the bottom
- Using a serrated knife, put slits in the top
- Brush with egg wash
- Let sit for about 5-10 minutes, then bake
- Bake at 375-400 for 20 minutes
