Digital Detox – a Book Review & A Giveaway
Detox your kids
If you know me, you know I am opposed to a boatload of electronics for kids. I think the outdoors is the best play station in the world. I believe a bored kid is a good thing because he will learn to entertain himself and get his creative juices flowing when he’s bored. [That is, unless the parent or another adult feels compelled to keep the bored kid entertained.]
A few years ago I came across a post written by Molly DeFrank. I asked and received permission to share it on my blog. Here’s the link if you want to read that post. I have become a fan of this gal because she speaks my language, right down my alley.
Molly and her husband struggled with the attitudes of their kiddos and foster kids – and the constant demand for playing on mom’s phone. So they did a cold-turkey digital detox for two weeks. The transformation was amazing.
Molly wrote a book about their experience of a two-week detox. That two-week detox is still going strong. Before you scoff at this idea, you should read the book and follow her on social media. If you follow this plan and it doesn’t work, I want to hear about it from you. Seriously.
Digital Detox book tidbits:
- For every hour of television viewing, the risk of attention problems increases by 10 %,
- We want to raise thoughtful kids with strong characters. The best way to cultivate this is to put our kids in situations that require them to hone these skills.
- Boredom is not a problem parents should solve for their kids. Boredom is an opportunity for for our kids to create, invent, and use their brilliant minds.
- Allowing our kids to be bored is really, really good for them.
- A child who doesn’t enjoy books is a child who has not yet met his genre.
- The “rapt-attention” face on your small child is the look of overstimulation, not of learning.
- Parents can fix what’s broken, and it starts in the home.
- Keep tech use in a family space so your kids will feel protected and accountable.
