He is Our Dwelling Place

dwelling placeFinding that place

When the Children of Israel left Egypt, they needed a place to belong. They traveled in the wilderness, where God had them build a tabernacle

A tabernacle is a fixed or moveable habitation. It can be a meeting place for worship. That is what the Israelites found their tabernacle to be for them. The tabernacle was a place to worship and to dwell.  It was also a call to worship the true God. It was their dwelling place.

To truly worship God, they were called to the tabernacle, to the dwelling place. We are called to do the same.

dwelling placea place for generations

Psalm 90 says, “Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

This scripture assures us that He has been in our past, walks with us today, and goes before us. Our Lord is our dwelling place. He is everlasting, and He is God.

He walked with our ancestors and He will walk with our descendants.  In every day, He will be our dwelling place if we belong to Him.

Dwelling place for today

When I read this scripture, I remember those who are no longer here, but who walked with Him, giving me the spiritual heritage I have. I think of the journey on which I travel – and the fact that He is with me now. I rest assured in the promise of tomorrow – and the fact that He will be with our children and future generations, if we claim Him as ours.

This dwelling place is not a geographical location. It does not need to be a certain spot in our house or in nature. This place is a spiritual place where we find rest.

When the Israelites stopped to worship, they stopped moving. They found a place to unpack their tents and set up camp until God told them to move on. In those places of unpacked tents, they worshipped and found rest. To truly dwell in this place, we must unpack and rest. We must also rest in the promises God made thousands of years ago, and the promises He keeps today.

finding beauty in that dwelling place

When troubles and conflicts come, go to that dwelling place. Find your shelter, comfort, and rest in the One Who alone gives peace and rest. The last verse in this chapter says, “Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us. . . ”  May it be so!
