New Every Morning – a Six-Word Devotional
His faithfulness shown in His mercies.
Lamentations tells us His mercies are new every morning. This is because His compassions do not fail.
If we take these six words one by one, we have an eternal truth, a theology, and a promise that lasts through eternity. Read it through six times, putting the emphasis on a different word each time. You’ll see the beauty of this promise. Because His mercies really are new every morning.
His
This is talking about God. Who is He?! He is Creator and Sustainer of the universe – and that includes me (and you).
Our God is Eternal and Everlasting. He is Compassionate, Merciful, Just, and Love. Put these attributes (and many others) side by side and you will find that these are ours because, for the believer, He is ours. And His mercies are new every morning.
Mercies
Mercy is “compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm.” Does God have the power, the right, or the authority to punish or harm us? Certainly. We are sinful creatures. Even in our best attempts at living right, we fall short. Therefore, His mercy is undeserved, unmeasured, and unwarranted. When He could withhold water and air, He does not. When He could pour out His wrath instead of pardon, He doesn’t. Every single day, we experience His mercies. Not leftover, re-warmed or thrown out, He gives us what we do not deserve, every morning. His Mercies are new every morning.
Are
This is present-tense. Not in the past (which is also true of God) but today, in the present. It is not borrowing from tomorrow or leaning on yesterday. God’s presence and provision is current and not based on past truths. His Truth is constant and present on each day. Present tense. This is action occurring right now. Present Perfect. This means that although His mercies began in the past, they continue to the present time. That time is now – today. This is for today, and for every day. And His mercies are new every morning.
New
Whole and unblemished. Not worn out, torn, or frayed. Complete and perfect. That is what newness is. His mercies are not leftover from another day or another time. They are not warmed up leftovers or doctored up attributes. When something is new, it is untarnished, unused, and complete. There is no partly empty in this. Complete and in full store for our availability, His mercies are new every morning.
Every
Not a day goes by that we are empty. It is ours every single day. This is seven days a week, 365 days a year. There is always availability, always fresh supply, and always more than enough for each day. Daily, we have these gifts. That is why we can say His mercies are new every morning.
Morning
A day is the time of light between one night and the next. Every morning, as the days begins, His mercies are new. Every morning when I rise, it is a new day. In the dawning of the day, we need not fear. Because God is constant, so are His promises. This is a constant: His mercies are new every morning.
When we awake, His thoughts are with us. His promises are with us. And every day, every single day, His mercies are new. Claim that promise and live in it. Say so!
