Sweet Baked Ham

Sweet hamThis recipe takes a little over four hours of your time, but it’s not labor-intensive. It is festive, tasty, and makes an elegant ham. We’ve used this recipe for several years for our church’s Christmas dinner for our women, hosted in someone’s home. It is always a hit, and someone always asks for the recipe.

You’ll need a pre-cooked, bone-in ham, and a butt portion works well. We buy the hickory smoked flavor. You’ll cook it in vinegar water for three hours. That’s right. THREE hours.

Your house might smell like vinegar. Be sure to use your stove-top fan or open a window if it bothers you. Honestly, it didn’t bother me, but when Dave walked in the house he said he sure could smell the vinegar!

After it has simmered for the allotted time, drain it and let it cool. After it is cooled enough to handle, remove the bone and fat from the ham and feed it to your dog or cats (if you have any). Next, shred the ham. This is so easy to do if you use a heavy-duty mixer like a Bosch or a Kitchen Aid. I used my whisk attachment in the Bosch and I kid you not, it was shredded in less than a minute.

Next comes the part where you add seasoning.

Yeah. It might look better in a different color dish! This is the brown sugar, mustard mixture.

Guaranteed, you’ll think this ham is going to be sooo dry. It won’t be, if you follow the directions. I promise.

Serve this ham with sides of potatoes and Cole slaw or a salad. You can also use it in sandwiches. For this sandwich, I used freshly made cornmeal rolls. You can find the recipe for the rolls by clicking here.
