How to be a Mean Mom

Nobody, but nobody wants a mean mom. The mean moms are the ones who don’t care if other kids get to do everything they want to do. It seems they look to see what everybody else is doing and then make sure their kids can’t do it.

Things like bedtime rules, homework rules, and chores separate moms into two classes: the ones who are mean and the ones who are not. Mean moms are quickly discovered because they have rules for bedtime and make their kids do homework before play. They also make their kids apologize and ‘fess up when they cheated on a test, punched the lights out on a kid, or told a lie.

Mean moms and play

Everybody knows that kids need time to play, especially when they sat in school all day long with absolutely no time for playing on the playground or going to PE. That’s what schools do, you know. They make kids sit still all day long so when they get home they should be allowed to play instead of doing homework. Mean moms are not like that. They don’t let their kids play and do homework later. Oh no, mean moms say homework has to be done first. Even when their kids tell them that nobody else’s mom makes them do homework first, mean moms don’t budge. They stick to their guns like they are right.

Mean moms also have rules for bedtime. They don’t let their kids stay up late like all the other moms do. It doesn’t matter if there’s a show they want to finish watching, a game they’d like to complete with a sibling, or a story they’d like to hear from some grownup in the house. That’s how to identify a mean mom. They enforce bedtime rules like no other mom does. Mean moms think that kids need a lot of sleep. They don’t understand that kids can go to school the next day just as easily if they stay up half the night as if they had ten hours of sleep. They don’t even let their kids prove it to them, and that’s really mean.

Mean moms and baths

Mean moms make a kid take a bath, even when he is not dirty. When he doesn’t think he stinks, he believes he shouldn’t have to take a bath. After all, Billy’s mom never makes Billy take a bath if he doesn’t want to. Not taking a bath saves water and time – and laundry! However, a mean mom doesn’t care.  A mean mom even checks to make sure a kid has brushed his teeth. It’s not her set of teeth, so why should she care? ‘Cause she’s mean, that’s why. Having to be clean is another way to know if your mom is mean.

Mean moms and character

Mean moms are constantly watching their kids to make sure they behave. They’re not like other moms, who think their kids will be good all the time. They don’t make excuses for their kids when they cheat on a test, punch a kid’s lights out, or tell a lie. Oh no, mean moms are Johnny-on-the-spot to make sure their kid is embarrassed because they make them apologize. After all, kids do make mistakes, and every adult in the world has told a lie one time or another. Mean moms are like that; they don’t let their kids get away with even a little bit. They’re not like other moms. Oh no, mean moms hold their kids’ feet to the fire. They expect more from their kids, and that’s another way you can identify a mom who is mean.

A Mean Mom – Guilty as charged

Mean moms don’t care if you tell them, “You’re such a mean mom.” Sometimes they even reply, “Thank you. That means I’m doing my job.” They’re not phased when you tell them “I wish you were like Bobby’s mom, because his mom isn’t mean!” Oh no, mean moms can’t be swayed. They might even tell you they’re not out to gain a popularity contest. Mean moms might say things like, “You don’t have to be my friend,” or even something like, “You don’t even have to like me. You just have to obey.”

Every kid needs a mean mom. He just doesn’t know it – yet.
