Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

hot chocolate mix

Winter-ready – homemade is best

Hot chocolate mix is best when you don’t have time to make it from scratch. Granted, I think there’s nothing better than real hot chocolate made from scratch. If you want to make it from scratch, here is the recipe.

If you’re low in milk or need an easy way to mix one cup at a time, here’s a tried-and-true recipe I’ve used for years. You can decrease the sugar as much as you’d like, and you can buy low-sugar or no-sugar Nestles Quick if you’d rather. Use what works best for you!

Variations

This is a great recipe for hot chocolate mix to give to folks for Christmas or Valentine’s day, or for teacher appreciation week.  Put a cute lid on top of a jar and pass it on to someone special.

Miniature marshmallows are an option to add. I usually serve them on the side. If I’m using this as a gift, I add a snack bag of  miniature marshmallows to go with the pint-sized jar. Not everyone likes marshmallows, and some folks like more than others.  This way, each individual gets to choose.

Serving

Mix your ingredients for this hot chocolate mix together and store in an air-tight container.hot chocolate mix

To serve, you add 1/4 – 1/3 cup (2-3 Tbsp.) of mix per cup of boiling water and stir to dissolve.

I keep a batch of this stored in an air-tight Lock and Lock container.  I’ve sent it to the woods with my kids when they’re sled riding and want hot chocolate to serve at the bottom of the hill by the fire.  A drink cooler of boiling water, Styrofoam cups and this homemade hot chocolate mix is all they need.
