Broken Crayons – Recycled
The broken crayons problem.
It’s the end of the school year, and there are many pieces of broken crayons. What to do with them? Is it worth saving those small pieces? Why not just throw them out?
Oh wait! Here’s a solution! Recycle them. Yep. Your kiddos will love this.
First, get all the kiddos to round up the broken crayons. See how many they can find. Next, soak the crayons in warm water – 5-10 minutes – so the paper loosens easily. Then remove all the paper.
Use paper liners or silicone muffin cups OR just grease the muffin tins. Using liners helps getting the crayons out of the tins, but if you don’t have any, just add a dab of vegetable oil with a paper towel.
- Preheat oven to 250.
- Break up all the “already-broken” crayons (with paper removed) into 1 inch or less sections.
- Put your broken crayons into the tins. Make them 1/2 – 3/4 full. You can mix different colors for swirled results, OR put similar colors together.
- Can do ones with similar color or mix it up for swirled results.
- Bake for 10-20 minutes or until crayons are melted. After the first ten minutes, check the crayons, then continue to check every 5 minutes or so until they are completely melted.
- Remove from oven and cool completely. Remove from tins.
You and your kiddos will enjoy these upcycled crayons!
