Separating Light from Darkness

separating light from darknessIn the beginning

Genesis tells us how God made the world. First, there was darkness hovering on the face of the deep. Then God said, “Let there be Light.”

Like turning on a light switch, there was light (at least that’s how I imagine it happened.)  In the same verse, we read “God saw that the light was good.”

Then, He separated the light from darkness.

Was this like separating a yolk from an egg white or milk from cream? Are separating these the same as separating light from darkness?

In each of these cases, there are two distinct components blended together to make a whole until separation occurs. God created the universe and then He separated light from darkness. He pulled the light out of the darkness.

What is darkness and light mixed together? Is it mostly darkness or mostly light?

This I know: God did not separate the light from the darkness for Himself.  He did it for us, because darkness and light are alike to Him. Scripture tells us this:

If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

My first spelunking adventure took place in a deep, dark, damp cave. We came prepared with boots, gloves, and lights. At one point, we turned off every light we had with us and listened to the silence in that dreary, dismal darkness. The creak of a bat, the movement of a rock overhead, and the sound of heavy breathing became ominous as we waited in the darkness. I just wanted to see!

Then the light came and darkness disappeared. Still better was the bright sunshine when we climbed up out of the cave. The light was so bright it hurt our eyes, but the warmth encapsulated us as we drank in sight. We stepped out of the darkness into the light! What a glorious feeling!

In the daily of our lives, there are nights when darkness creeps in. When morning arrives, the creaks and moans of night seem so far away. In the morning, light changes things. That’s how it is with darkness and Truth.

I've discovered, when overwhelmed with darkness, looking at the Light changes my perspective, my view, and my vision. Share on X One small glow makes the darkness disappear. Things hidden become visible. Things covered are no longer concealed. That is because Light dispels darkness.

Light changes everything. Light changes our perspective and our person. As we mature and grow, we find more light.

Proverbs tell us:

The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, while the way of the wicked is like deep darkness.

We can know who we are by the light or darkness in which we walk.

No matter how dark is your night, look to the Light. That is how we go about separating light from darkness.  We look at the situation, the statements, the accusations, the questions, and we separate light from darkness.  We separate Truth from the untruth. That is what God did when He created the world. Separating Light from darkness should be a way of life for us as well.
