Beef Goulash

The actual definition of Goulash is  is an American comfort food dish, similar to American chop suey. In Hungary, Goulash is” a highly seasoned Hungarian soup or stew of meat and vegetables, flavored with paprika.”

Fear not. This Goulash is just comfort home-cooked food that’s easy to make with ingredients you already have in your kitchen. It reminds me of Yuma Zettai  except it has fewer ingredients.

I can’t tell you if I grew up with this recipe or if it’s something I came up with on my own. I think it’s just a combination of recipes for ingredients that work well together and are an easy assembly from supplies you’re likely to have in your kitchen. It’s also an easy dish when you’re in a hurry and haven’t decided what to fix for supper thirty minutes before it’s time to eat. Yep. I’ve had those days.

You can add sauteed onions and peppers to this if you’d like.  Dump in onion powder or garlic powder for additional flavor. If you don’t have canned beef, use beef from another meal. You can can add peas to this mix or serve them (or green beans) on the side.

If you’d rather not use both soups, I suggest the tomato soup with a little extra milk.  You can also substitute hamburger, but I am partial to beef because it gives it a more comfortable flavor and feeling. Finish up the menu with homemade applesauce, and you’ve got a balanced meal. Your kids might enjoy finger jello instead of applesauce.

A simple dish of noodles, beef, and soups - tomato and cream of mushroom. Season with your favorite ingredients, add a vegetable and fruit, and you're set.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups noodles
  • 1-2 cups canned beef
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 can tomato soup
  • 1/4-1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Cook noodles according to directions
  • Drain noodles
  • Add beef and soups
  • Add milk if the mixture is too thick
  • Season with salt and pepper
  • Heat through
